Maeg’s View Book Review: Stalling For Time: My Life As An FBI Hostage Negotiator by Gary Noesner

Welcome back to our 5th book for Maeg’s View Book Review! This one was a good one as this is totally up my alley of books I like to read. It sounds bad but I love a good true story with some wins and losses so when I saw this book I thought it would be so interesting (plus I’m currently on a Criminal Minds binge on Disney+). Lets dive in!

“In Stalling for Time, the FBI’s chief hostage negotiator takes readers on a harrowing tour through many of the most famous hostage crises in the history of the modern FBI, including the siege at Waco, the Montana Freemen standoff, and the D.C. sniper attacks. Having helped develop the FBI’s nonviolent communication techniques for achieving peaceful outcomes in tense situations, Gary Noesner offers a candid, fascinating look back at his years as an innovator in the ranks of the Bureau and a pioneer on the front lines. Whether vividly recounting showdowns with the radical Republic of Texas militia or clashes with colleagues and superiors that expose the internal politics of America’s premier law enforcement agency, Stalling for Time crackles with insight and breathtaking suspense. Case by case, minute by minute, it’s a behind-the-scenes view of a visionary crime fighter in action.”

Questions:

What was your favourite part of the book?

I’d have to say my favourite part is learning what hostage negotiators do all while reading about the true stories that we’ve heard or watch on tv. This book has a lot of detail about those events and what went wrong.

Did you race to the end, or was it more of a slow burn?

At the begin it was a slow burn but once you get into the events that you know and heard about you want to keep reading and he keeps you engaged.

Which scene has stuck with you the most?

The scene that stuck with me the most would have to be the Waco situation; I knew about it but I didn’t know how things went so wrong. In this book he explains how most hostage negotiations are set up but he also talks about the other half with tactical waiting to go in all while they’re trying to stop a big mess from happening. As we know shit hit the fan with this situation and he explains why, which create tension and makes his job harder in the long run.

Are there any areas you wished the author had elaborated upon further?

Yes, in the book he obviously talks about his life and career up to these points and about the events but I also wish he made a chapter teaching about negotiations. Throughout the book you get some information but it’s mostly “it takes practice” which I completely agree with but also reading about what to say or not to say, your body language, your tone and training your body to be calm in crazy situations would be interesting as well.

Did this book make you want to explore the subject matter more?

I think it did. I made me look further into the situations he talked about and not to mention, as I said I’ve been binging Criminal Minds, one episode came on which made me think to myself that this sounds very familiar. I looked up what the episode was based on and it was based on some of the events he talks about in the book. It blew my mind as I had just read his book and now, I’m seeing it based on the show. I also think more people should read this to learn more about staying calm in situations, as I said it’s not blunt information about how to negotiate but there’s still educational bits in there that we could use in our everyday lives.

Well that’s all for Stalling For Time! Let me know in the comments if you’ve read this book before and what you thought!

Felt Letter Board

Jumped on the bandwagon! My mum got me the light up one which I love but I usual use it for special occasions. This one I wanted to be more decor for my house. To my surprise the good quality ones are kind of on the expensive side but I kind of get that at the same time. So I got this one at Chapters for $39.50, it comes with the small board which is 25cm x 25 cm, it’s soild oak frame and real felt; not to mention it comes with 315 white letters. I wasn’t expecting that much letters for some reason cause even the light up one you have to buy extra pieces for it. Needless to say this was a great purchase and I really just put smart ass sayings on it.

Charcuterie Board

Everyone loves a charcuterie board! They’re just so appealing to the eye, the food tastes great and it’s actually pretty easy to make. My Mum got me this one for Christmas and I love it! It’s super nice and I love the shape, it’s easy to clean and you just store it like you would a cutting board. I left the paper it comes with around it because we all know men don’t read things so at least it’ll make him question why the hell there’s paper on it in hopes he won’t use it as a cutting board! I’m not sure where my mum got this one but I found it at Linen Chest for $19.95 but you have find them everywhere!

On Boards: Simple & Inspiring Recipe Ideas to Share at Every Gathering

My Mum being my awesome Mum paired the board with this book for charcuterie boards! I used this on New Years to make a board, it gives you tips on where to place the big stuff then you fill it in, made it extremely easy, it also has a bunch of different boards for different themes and places around the world! You can get this book at Chapters for $25!

COVID-19 Layoff: Day Fifty-Three

Happy Mother’s Day!

My sister, step-dad and I had a plan to surprise my mum! Couple weeks ago my sister and I decided to order my mum the body shop mother’s Day tote bag!

It’s filled with all these awesome products, which my family loves a good Body Shop product! So it’s a good one and the bag is actually really cute.

We also decided to get her a book that she has to fill out. Thought it was just a cool little idea and in the future we’ll get it back.

I then got her a card that is related to toilet paper since there was a toilet paper crisis! My sister and step dad also planned to Swiss Chalet for linner and hang out. It was a good day and a good surprise for my mum.

After I drove to Vaughan to get gas because it was cheaper and I get my reward points for discounted/free gas! Then watched some TV until I fell asleep on the couch 🤦‍♀️.

That’s all for today. How was everyone’s Mother’s Day? Hope they were great.

COVID-19 Layoff: Day Nine

I definitely did not make today interesting.

Drax got walked five times today, I did not work out and I literally cross stitch all day. Literally worked on the same cross stitch all day and I can’t even show it because it’s a gift for my sister and I know she reads this blog! Hi Caitlin!

My sister also wants some bread so I made that today and it’s currently rising so tomorrow morning I can bake it!

Dave and I did go to Walmart to get a new puzzle but they were completely sold out so now were going to order one off of Chapters website because apparently their still delivering! We’ll probably do that tomorrow.

I did cut my boyfriend’s hair, which I’m happy about because he doesn’t look homeless anymore! Woohoo!

Only other thing to write about is that my dog is EXTREMELY suck today! He follows me everywhere I go, I give him attention, we played in an empty field today, he got treats, I just don’t know what his issue is. Knowing him it’s something simple like Dave and I are not sitting on the couch with him but now he’s finally asleep and we’ll start the whole thing over again tomorrow!

Stayed tuned for maybe fun adventures.

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask – Champagne

I actually got this as a sample but loved that it was a lip mask but with some colour! It is thick so your hair will get stuck to it but the colours are great. My sample came with the colours, champagne, natural and smashed. I tried them all and they’re great, the colours aren’t too bright so it’ll go well with everyone. You can get this at Sephora for $30.00.

Tarte – Tarteguard 30 Vegan Sunscreen SPF 30

As most of you know by now I have sensitive skin so I was looking for something that I could put on my face without breaking out. I bought this and decided to give it a try, now I liked it, I didn’t love it. It did the job, my face didn’t get 3rd degree burn, however, my face was still incredible red after spending the day at the beach (and yes I did reapply every 30-45 mins). After not being in the sun (the hour drive home) my face seemed to not be as red but still I thought the burn will show up later. In the end my face wasn’t burn’t! I bought this product at Sephora for $40.00.

Ombrelle SPF 30 Lightweight Sunscreen

Beach days are the best but you have to protect yourself from the sun. My Mum had just bought this but I needed sunscreen so she let me take it. Now sunscreen works my friends but you have to reapply it and that’s what I did. When I got there I put it on, sat in the sun for a bit and went in the water, after I got out of the water, I dried off, let the sun dry me out for maybe 2-3mins then I reapplied again. I did this all day, I was at the beach for 4 hours and didn’t get burnt! This product is thick so it works wonders, rub it in good but a little goes along way if you’re putting it on smaller areas. You can get this at Walmart for $20.00.

tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint – Moody

I have recently become obsessed with tarte products because they’re so great. I wrote about their mascara that I bought in last months favourites. This month is the lip tint, I wore these to a wedding in Barrie. It’s a great colour and it keeps your lips nice and moist. The only problem is you do need to reapply quite a bit I found. Which is fine because it gave me a reason to get up and do something! I actually didn’t buy this, I wanted to buy it but my sister already had a sample size so I have that now. You can get the regular one at Sephora for $29.00.

Lancome Bi-Facil-Double Action Eye Makeup Remover

When I sent out that Facebook post asking all my lady friends what’s the best makeup remover my mum saw it and that’s when she gave me the Clinque sample in my March Favourites. Well my Mum’s best friend saw the post as well and gave my Mum her sample bottle for me to try. The Lancome Bi-Facil makeup remover is one of my favourites (tied with the Clinque one). They are honestly both great products. I find the Lancome makeup remover hurts my eyes a bit but it gets more of the makeup off, it has also lasted a little bit longer than other but not by much. You can get this product in a lot of stores, Sears, The Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart and of course Sephora for roughly $36.00.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths

This was the product I had in mind when I was looking for a new face wipe since Target closed down. This product is great, like the entire Cetaphil line is, it really is gentle, refreshing, and doesn’t make your face red when you use it; it also comes in two sizes! They have a small travel pack (10 cloths) that you can put in your purse or beach bag, and they have a big pack (25 cloths) that you would leave at home. The only problem with these is they’re impossible to find! I’ve been using them for about 2-3 weeks now because they’re hard to find but I’m impressed with them. I kept going back to the store to see if they had them but they didn’t, then I went to the travel section and bought 3 travel sizes ones. I absolutely love Cetaphil products! You can get these bad boys at Shoppers Drug Mart for $5.00-$7.00.

19. Trident Gum. Freshens breath and whitens teeth for those days when were really tired and maybe forgot to brush them! Oops.
