Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Toronto

Hey Everyone!

Because tomorrow night I am going to Nuit Blanche for the 6th year I want to write to you about what goes down and what you should plan for!

What is Nuit Blanche? A free all-night contemporary art event.

Where is Nuit Blanche? Streets of Toronto, Ont, Canada.

When is Nuit Blanche? This year it’s Oct 4th, 2014 from 6:53pm to sunrise.

First of all you would want to know more about it so you can check out their website http://www.scotiabanknuitblanche.ca

Prep! You need to know that there are some options for you when you come to this awesome event. For those of you who are out of town or who just want a nice place to stay, they have hotel options for you. I’ve been going to this for awhile so I’ve learnt from my mistakes. The first couple of times I went with friends who lives in Toronto so it wasn’t bad at all, ever since then I’ve went with people from Brampton. Even though Brampton is only 30 mins away it’s hard to get around with transit since no one really comes and goes from Brampton to Toronto. My sister and I for last year and this year got a hotel, it helps a lot of they lower the prices of the REALLY nice hotels. You can find the hotel specials on their website.

What to bring! It’s fall in Toronto and I know global warming is making it all messed up but for this weekend it’s suppose to cold, and wet. Before you head out make sure you 100% check the weather and be prepared for anything!

Dress warm – last year I wore jeans, riding boots (but changed to Toms), Roots sweater and a fake leather Billabong jacket with a toque (I’m just Canadian like that).

Rain, rain, go away – because it says it’s going to rain I plan on bringing a mini umbrella (Shoppers Drug Mart sells them) they fit into a purse and my rain boots just in case.

Bag – DO NOT bring your most expensive purse the you have to carry, bring a cross shoulder bag. I know you I have a big, expensive bag but don’t do it. I usually bring my Coach cross shoulder bag that EVERYONE has. Guys or girls you can also bring a backpack!

Camera/Cell Phone – Take all the pictures you want, I took lots! Use your cell phone camera! Nuit Blanche has their own hash tag, #snbTO Make a fun night of it!

How to get around! YOU WALK! Yup, you need to wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking a shit load! The TTC and Go Train have extended service because you do have to travel to different zones. Nuit Blanche also makes a Speical Event Day Pass, it’s 1 price ($11), unlimited travel! It’s a pretty sweet deal and you should get it because I’ve gotten it and used it every year.

Even Guide/Map! If you check out the website they have it already on there and you can print it out. If not you can find one of their Info Centres they have set up around Toronto to grab one. I really suggest you do this because it has all the zones, where all the art is and it tells you what it is, who made it and a little info on every piece of art.

Where to eat! FOOD TRUCKS! The website has a list of all the food trucks, check them out right away because if you wait you won’t get the really good stuff!

I do suggest going out later because right away it will be crazy busy! I do hope this helps you but can find most of this info and more on their websites. If you have any questions you can ask me as well!

Thanks for reading!
Maeghan.

ps. I will be posting pictures later on!

Canadian Eh?

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but it’s fucking cold in Canada! Literally the other day it was so nice out, just a light snow covering, the next day it was cold and windy that was about it, by night time it was a full on blizzard with -30 weather. My boyfriend had to drive me home last night in the middle of the storm because I had to work this morning! It took the car 30 mins to warm up and he was scrapping the car for 10-15 mins to try and get the ice off; which was not working. The roads are completely covered in snow still, it’s still -30, windy as hell, and everyone is experiencing ice quakes or frost quakes.

For those of you who didn’t know what a ice/frost quake was (which is okay cause neither did I), they are when it is so cold that the water on the ground or anywhere really expands and makes a very loud boom. It honestly sounds like gun shots going off, that’s how loud it is, apparently they were going off all over the GTA and people could hear it from miles away. These happened last night but it sounded like it was coming from the roof of my apartment, which is possible since it’s flat and there could be water or ice up there.

It was so cold outside that everyone was saying that you should stay in doors if you can and only go outside if you really need too. Cab companies were not working today, schools were cancelled and even a NHL hockey game was cancelled because of the weather. Also they were saying if you were outside with exposed skin you could get frostbite in 5 mins – this is why my boyfriend picked me up from work since it’s a 15 min walk home. Everyone in Canada should have ski/snowboarding goggles so they can cover their eyes and still see when it is this cold, we all may look like idiots but it would be worth the warmth.

Everyone stay warm if you have this crazy weather where you are!

No power on Christmas Eve

December 24th we go up to my dad’s for Christmas with him. This year I went up with my best friend and my sister. Before we left the house we knew he didn’t have power because of the storm so we had to dress warm, the only problem was it was the coldest night out of the week (-14). We left the house and went to a Tim Hortons by my house, when we got there it was jammed and the drive-thru was closed. We left and went to a different one, when we go there the line up for the drive-thru was long but we waited. When we were in line I remembered that I forgot my rum balls I made for everyone – we went back to my house to pick them up. Finally, we were on the road to my dad’s, which is a 45min drive. By the time we got there the sun had just gone down and it was dark, you could still kind of see the trees when we noticed that the big tree house we had was crushed because the tree fell over. Inside the house was pitch black, I couldn’t see where my dogs were and I don’t think they are like cats where they can see in the dark so you trip over them. My dad put the fire place on and lit all the candles – thank god my step mum has an obsession with candles. The house was freezing, none of us ate so we literally ate two whole chickens they bought from the store then we opened our gifts.

We made my step mum, dad and step brother open theirs first and explained everything, my best friend opened hers next and then finally we opened ours. I hope I can remember everything they got me but I’m going to try. I got nail polish, perfume, two roots t-shirts, one roots sweater, two movies I believe, socks, eyeliner, lip scrub, a photo album, old bottle of coke, Blue Jays book, and The Great Gatsby book.

From my best friend (since I opened it at my dad’s house), I got a yoga block, yoga ban, yoga DVD, Nutella cook book, Nutella, cookie spread, and a wooden spatula.

After we opened all our gifts my step mum and brother were both so cold that they went to their friends house to warm up and sleep. My dad stayed with us and chilled until he could no longer stay awake – which was pretty early since he worked the night before – we said goodbye and left.

Before we got into the car my dad told us to look up. Since the power was out in that little town the stars were so wicked, you could literally see all of them because he was a clear night too. It was actually so cool to see.
