The Worst Year Ever: The End of 2020

Australia bush fires, COVID-19 Pandemic, Kobe Bryant’s death, George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, Murder Hornets, Beirut explosion, Chadwick Boseman’s death, West Coast Wildfires, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, Donald Trump and the election, and Joe Biden Wins.

What a shitshow.

March 18th, 2020 (212 cases in Ontario) was the last day I worked before being told to stay home until further notice due to Corona Virus. On March 19th, 2020 I applied for EI (CERB didn’t excist yet), application took 4 hours to complete due to EVERYONE attempting to do the same thing. Over the next 3 months I panicked of not knowing what was happening with EI/CERB. No one knew what to do and there was rumors everyday of having to pay it back, have to pay the taxes, having to reapply every month and much more.
Like most people we panic shopped, we didn’t know what was going to stay open or if there would be enough food for everyone. We spent $800-$1000 on groceries in one month. Going to the grocery store was scary as you didn’t know who had the virus, masks were not mandatory and there was 100’s of people in the store at once. Eventually as things went on we figured out we had to wear masks and line up in order to get into the store and wash your hands as soon as you walked into your house. My hands have never been so dry in their life and I’m a hairstylist. My lockdown lasted 92 days before we were told we could go back to work. June 19th, 2020 was my first day back at work and I felt like I didn’t know how to do hair anymore. Masks became normal and being scared wasn’t a thing anymore – we just wanted to work.

September 26th, 2020 was my last day working at my first salon as I decided to move on to a new salon to further my career. On October 5th was my first day at my new job – it goes okay. On October 7th I get fired because the owner has a bad vibe from me. I go home dumbfounded that I just lost my job and we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Don’t change jobs in the middle of the pandemic! Over the next 45 days I job search and panic. I once again apply for EI and panic as the place that just fired me refused to give me a ROE, which you need in order to get money from the government. Eventually things get worked out (at least that’s what I think happened) and I get paid a month later from EI.

On November 21st, 2020 I accept a job at a hair salon in Maple. Panic because Ford was announcing if we were going into lockdown again. Fortunely York Region didn’t go into lockdown and I could work – I started December 1st, 2020. I get happy as I have found a job and the year finally seems to be turing around!

December 11th, 2020 the news announced York Region is going into lockdown. Work turned into an shitshow and hours got extended – I worked 11 hours.
Saturday due to too many workers and not enough room for guest I worked 5 hours.
Sunday, our last day, I worked 11 hours with no breaks. We ate when we could and sat for a 5 mins if we had time. We fit one weeks worth of clients into 2 days. I got home sore AF.

December 14th – Lockdown 1,940 cases
December 15th – 2,275 cases
December 16th – 2,139 cases
December 17th – 2,432 cases
December 18th – 2,290 cases
December 19th – 2,357 cases
December 20th – 2,316 cases
December 21st – 2,123 cases

On December 21st, 2020 Ford announces that all of Ontario will be entering a province wide lockdown starting December 26th, 2020 for a minimum of 28 days. As Toronto, Peel and York have already been in lockdown, this means that I will be sitting at home for a minimum of 42 days.

December 22nd – 2,202 cases
December 23rd – 2,408 cases
December 24th – 2,447 cases
December 25th – they didn’t post the numbers due to Christmas
December 26th – Provincial lockdown 4301 cases (this includes Christmas numbers)

Somewhere in between the 14th and now the UK has report a new strain of the virus that is worse and on December 27th two cases of the UK strain has been reported in Ontario.

This year seems to be never ending with bad news and it’s taking a toll on most people. I have officially been off for 5 months in 2020 and come January it will be a month off. I hope this lockdown gets us where we need to be to have a semi-normal life again. I haven’t seen friends, my dog has separation anxiety with me and people are getting tired of it. People don’t care anymore because it’s been a year long thing, humans adapt to whatever we need to and if the governament doesn’t figure it out this is just going to be something we live with for the rest of our lives.

This has officially been the most depressing blog I’ve ever written. This is just my verison of my year and the small amount I’ve dealt with. There are a lot of others who had it WAY worse and I’m thankfully the only issue I’ve had is to sit at home.

COVID-19 Layoff: Day Twenty-Six

Another 28 days….

Today was another day if doing nothing because I don’t know what to do with myself anymore. I read my Broke Millennial book most of the day, walked Drax and ate my three meals with some snacks of course.

Ford announced today that he’s extending the state of emergency meaning we have another 28 days before anything goes back to normal. I honestly don’t think anything is going back to normal until 2021. Canada or Ontario at least hasn’t even hit the peak yet, all we’re doing is delaying it more and more while keeping the whole province going stir crazy. I know most people I talk too rather just shut everything down and lock everyone up for 2 weeks and be done with it. Then again there would be idiots who went to go play in the park or something even though that’s illegal right now. Stay the fuck home!

In my house hold everyone’s sleeping patterns are so screwed up. My dog is actually awake during the day now, normally he sleeps because we’d usually be at work. Dave’s is completely messed up since he stays up until 3am playing video games and falls asleep on the couch all night. Eventually at 8am, I wake up with Drax and he finally goes into the bedroom until noon. I’ve tried to keep my pattern up but it’s hard when you’ve done nothing all day, not to mention I absolutely hate our mattress. I sleep with Drax most night now because Dave is on the couch (usually Drax night time bed), Drax decided to take Dave’s bed. Drax even uses Dave’s pillow like a human, it’s actually cute.

I feel like I need to start making lists to feel productive. I read somewhere that making lists are good because your brain get’s satisfied for crossing something off and feels productive.

On a positive note, our plants are growing! I will take pictures and post them in tomorrows post!

COVID-19 Layoff: Day Nine

I definitely did not make today interesting.

Drax got walked five times today, I did not work out and I literally cross stitch all day. Literally worked on the same cross stitch all day and I can’t even show it because it’s a gift for my sister and I know she reads this blog! Hi Caitlin!

My sister also wants some bread so I made that today and it’s currently rising so tomorrow morning I can bake it!

Dave and I did go to Walmart to get a new puzzle but they were completely sold out so now were going to order one off of Chapters website because apparently their still delivering! We’ll probably do that tomorrow.

I did cut my boyfriend’s hair, which I’m happy about because he doesn’t look homeless anymore! Woohoo!

Only other thing to write about is that my dog is EXTREMELY suck today! He follows me everywhere I go, I give him attention, we played in an empty field today, he got treats, I just don’t know what his issue is. Knowing him it’s something simple like Dave and I are not sitting on the couch with him but now he’s finally asleep and we’ll start the whole thing over again tomorrow!

Stayed tuned for maybe fun adventures.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2015!

WARNING: This is an opinion blog post.

Toronto Ontario Canada turns into a sleepless night of art. People from all around come to see crazy art installation all around Toronto from sunset to sunrise for one night only.

I personally go every year for about six or seven years now and this year was alright in my opinion. I’m going to talk about the good and the bad of this years Scotiabank Nuit Blanche.

The good:

  • One sleepless night every year to see art installations is amazing for the city.
  • The art itself. It amazes me how people can come up with such crazy ideas and make them come alive.
  • The TTC costume service – they ran out of the subway passes for Nuit Blanche but this year they had a back up plan or they’ve always had this just one guy decided to help us out.
  • Starbucks – they were open all night! It was freezing especially around Lakeshore and having them around was really great.
  • The map, it was great that they had a lot more maps this year so everyone could have one. And it was great that every installment had a pile of maps they could hand out this year.
  • Food trucks were greatly placed this year and were easy to find.

The bad:

  • No booklet of art information. I’ve been going to Nuit Blanche for years now and every year there has been a book of every art, a description and where it is. This comes in handy to figure out what you want to see, what you saw when posting pictures on social media to give some credit to the artist and it’s a great memory to keep.
  • Art being spread out way to far apart. I found that this year you spent more time walking or sitting on the subway to get to the art then actually seeing the art.
  • Closed down streets had minimal art on them, I mean if you’re going to close down a street you might as well put art in the middle of it like they use to do before.
  • Putting art in bad neighborhoods.
  • Putting art where there is no subway service.
  • Art was hidden way too much. Going down the Lakeshore was hard, I had to ask a cop where the art was because it was nowhere to be found. If I didn’t ask I probably would have walked right by it.
  • Great idea to put the event map on the mobile site and being able to use that. Only problem is you’re using your data the entire night and using the map off your phone is a pain.

Those are just some of my opinions of this years Nuit Blanche, don’t get me wrong I had a great time with my sister I just think there can be some improvements.

All those artists are amazing and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for next year.

Until next time,

Canadian Pet Expo!

This is the first thing I’m writing about for my 2015 list! Yay!

I actually forgot to put this on my list even though I knew about it for about half a year. I was at a reptile expo with my boyfriend when we got a card that told us about it, I was dying to go and begged my boyfriend. My boyfriend really just wanted to go for the reptiles but there wasn’t very much there, he still of course bought a frog.

Lets get started on my experience!

Well we started our morning off right with a shower, and Starbucks then headed our way there. The pet expo was held at the International Centre in Toronto, Ontario, it’s not a far drive from where we live so it was easy drive. We found parking no problem even though the place was packed since so many things were going on.

When we got out of the car there was a huge line up to get in but it was going extremely fast, and the best part is, you’re allowed to bring your own dog so you had so many animals to look at and pet! It was so much fun, there was actually so much going on. There is hundreds of vendors there, it was Canada’s largest cat show, Ultimate Air Dog show were dogs jump into a pool to get Nerf toys, Birds demonstrations and Reptilia was there. There was probably so much more that I missed you can’t even believe how big this was.

I love both cats and dogs (and of course reptiles) but the only thing I didn’t like was the cats. Their owners were old ladies who wouldn’t allow you to touch them and if you did they would walk away from you and lock the cat up in a crate. We didn’t spend a lot of time with the cats because of that and not to mention the cat show seems mean to me. The dogs on the other hand, owners let you pet the dog, some let you give them treats, they talk to you about their pets, they were fun.

The best part for me was petting the big Newfoundland dog that was there. I grew up with a Newfy Dog so I was in love! I didn’t take pictures unfortunatly but you can go online to look at them all at http://www.canadianpetexpo.ca/

Next year my boyfriend and I said we would go for two days instead of the one because we missed out on the pigs and ducks that I wanted to see!

My Apartment = Racist Assholes?

There is a “club” – and I use that term loosely – called My Apartment located at 35 Brunel Rd #2, Mississauga, ON. My friends birthday just passed and she wanted to go out somewhere new, some other friends of mine have been to this club and loved it. So when the birthday girl told me she plans to go to My Apartment I said okay with no problems. Worst mistake ever.

First of all, don’t be fooled thinking this club is nice like the ones we have in Toronto, no this club was located in a stripe mall (outdoor mall) and looked like a scene out of 8 Mile. When we got out of the car my friends and I started walking but the birthday girls boyfriend was still at the car because he forgot something. One random dude, gets out of his car and walks up to us asking if we can go in with him because they don’t let guys in without girls. We said no, he wouldn’t leave us alone so I stopped walking and waited for my friends boyfriend. The girls stopped with me and when her boyfriend caught up to us the random walked away.

We get to the line and all we see is white people waiting to get in, myself and another girl in our group walked up, got ID and was let in. All of the sudden this huge group of brown guys got let into the club without getting ID and they were all wearing running shoes – not that the bouncer checked. After they passed by I was looking for my friends and noticed they weren’t behind us so I went out and asked what’s going on? The bouncer wouldn’t let me friend’s boyfriend into the club because he didn’t like his shoes. This place has a dress code, the sign says “No running shoes (or shoes that look like them)” and obviously there’s a dress code with the clothing but that wasn’t the issue. The bouncer said wait here and we’ll talk so we waited, finally the bouncer comes back and asks what are we going to do? The boyfriend said I’m there DD (which is was) can you just let me in for them? Bouncer says no and starts getting extremely rude. It honestly seemed like he was waiting for a bribe. We left, were were not going to give them our money after he was being so rude to us.

I went online today and read the reviews for My Apartment, pretty much all of them say the same thing, they’re racist, bouncers are rude, club is empty because they don’t let the white guys in, service is terrible and so much more. In some of the reviews people wrote that the bouncers told you you were waiting in line because you’re white and asked when they were going to get in and were told whenever the bouncer feels like it. How sad is that? Also don’t be fooled by there website, it make it look ten times better then what it actually is!

I don’t even know why this place has a dress code since it’s so gross looking. Don’t waste you’re money here.

Anyways, my friends and I left and went to fionns and had a blast no thanks to My Apartment.

Welcome to Canada

Christmas is only 3 days away, that is absolutely crazy. This year has gone by so fast that it is kind of sad. My year started out really shitty but somehow got great. I work tonight, then I go to my boyfriends then all my Christmas madness starts when I get home. On Monday my uncle is coming over – he’s the uncle I always like so I want to see him and I want to talk a picture with him. Then after that all the other madness happens that I wrote before in a different post.

Welcome to Canada

I don’t know if you guys know this but I live in Toronto, Ont, Canada. If you’ve looked at the weather for us it has been typical winter weather but all of the sudden it decided to half snow and half rain – making it ice pretty much. It rains all day long but as soon as it starts to turn into night the ground freezes making it one big sheet of ice. I went to sushi last night with my friends, when we were done we had to skate our way to the car. It was actually so funny because the driveway is on a hill but at the same time it was very dangerous. I hope when I go to work tonight and walking to my boyfriend’s car I don’t fall on my ass. I don’t have a picture for you guys from myself but I am going to steal one off of Facebook from a friend.

Now you can see what the hell is going in here.

Christmas Traditions

Over the years my family has done Christmas we sort of have a routine that we follow. My parents are divorced and my dad moved away so we just do our Christmas on Christmas eve now. My mum on the other hand there is a whole bunch.

1. Try to wake up Maeghan (aka me) – so when I was younger I was NOT a morning person. Trying to wake me up was a very dangerous thing because if you did it the wrong way you would either get yelled at or I would hit you.

2. Tell my sister to go back to bed at 4 AM – my sister is the one who gets so excited over Christmas is our family. She will wake up at 4 AM and try to get the whole family up. She usually comes into my room and tells me that Santa came or to get up, which I don’t. She then would go to my mum’s room and try to wake me up but they would tell her to go to bed. Now and days my sister just waits in her room until it’s time or she makes coffee for everyone.

3. Croissants – ever since my parents divorced my mum made it a thing that she would make croissants in the morning. That would be our breakfast as we opened up our stockings. Now my whole family is up at this point but myself, they let me sleep as long as possible because I hate waking up early, especially if I’m hungover from the Christmas Eve party.

4. Terrible pictures – every year my mum takes pictures of us as we open up our gifts, but as you know no one looks good right after they just woken up. None of these pictures have every made it to Facebook but this year I will be posting them so I am going to look great before I come down to open gifts.

5. Opening gifts – some of my sister’s gifts and mine are the same or similar so when we open up our gifts they sometimes take forever because we have the open some things at the same time. It’s funny though and makes the whole process fun.

6. After math – after opening all our gifts we all decided to put things together or go through them once again and actually give a good look at things. I think everyone in the world does this.

7. Family comes over – after all of that we have to deal with all of our family come over. This is very interesting because our house is small and we have all these people coming over. Some of the people we don’t like too much so I stay down for about an hour then go up to my room.

What about you?

Alright I want to know what you guys do for Christmas or what weird traditions you have to do each year. Leave them in a comment and maybe I will make a list or something! So leave your name and your weird traditions/things you do on Christmas!
